About our Capoeira program

Capoeira is one of our latest additions to the Yamasaki Academy schedule. It is a very unique martial art that, through dance, allowed the African slaves in Brazil to learn and practice how to defend them selves. Classes are taught by Yara Cordeiro in Rockville.

See the schedule for class times, or for more information on Yara, please visit our Instructors Section.

Feel free to write capoeira@grappling.com, or call 301-770-0969 if you have further questions, or would like to set up an appointment to try our Capoeira class.

See schedule for class times.

Capoeira History

Capoeira is a centuries-old Brazilian dance that combines martial arts with the pulse and energy of a Carnival party. The class forms a circle, called the roda (HO-da), and beats drums native to Brazil . The teacher plays a stringed instrument called the berimbau and belts out songs in Portuguese that have easy-to-imitate refrains. The lyrics give verbal directions, praise and reprimands to two people who then spar inside the circle. Though there is no contact or striking each other, the basic moves involve open hand punches, lots of kicks and acrobatic moves (like cartwheels).
